There are a lot of posts on this problem, so I don't profess to be the last word on it. Indeed, this is just another post on the burgeoning problem. In fact, there is a website devoted to the past addresses and fake names used by past Nigeria-based scams.
But this one deserves a little spotlight.
It began with an ad I posted in the L.A. Craigslist, as well as on Blujay, for some 18k Tiffany Fringe Earrings. I put the ad in because, like many other people, I need the money.
And that's when it began. So I wanted to prove that I had bought the earrings myself and because, like most normal people, I threw away the receipt, I put up an image of my bank account statement. It said I could prove that I bought them myself. Which I did. All $514.19 of it. Sheesh. What was I thinking?
At any rate, I was, and am, asking for a little over $100 less than I paid for them. $400 to be specific. And I got a response within a few hours.
It sounded too good to be true. Sound familiar? What is that adage they say about "If it sounds to good to be true, it is?" Well, as much as we would like to think that we are special, individually, there is a reason that is an adage. Because it is true.
So the buyer was named "Jerry Springer": beware of that name, right? Again, sounds unreal, so it probably is. The email address, and all subsequent ones, are gmail addresses: Springerfuture011@gmail.com.
This is the content of a series of emails over the past two days, from April 1 (so appropriate) through April 3:

Four emails were in my box, from, supposedly, Paypal, though the return address was different:

And now we are getting emails from hsbcgold@gmail.com that says

ReplyDeletepaypalpay@mail2pal.com
good thing i faked the tracking number and they believed it because i had a friend that was sending a package out to nigeria for his cousin.
Sorry but WHY would anyone ship an item without receiving a payment.
ReplyDeletePaypal DO NOT hold transfers, ever.
I am livid, since one of these scammers won't stop emailing me, seems that they are not reading my email as if it is automated system. Must be.
Yea.. i am fuming right now... Yea I am stupid... but do not respond to me if ur just gonna lecture me what I shouldnt have done... so anyway... i got screwed too... have any of you found what we can do to try to get our items back or anything? I wanna buy a ticket head out there and hunt these pricks down
ReplyDeletei lost my new iphone worth $700 to me because i bought it on ebay and also paid $31 for postal service and more stuff ...........
ReplyDeletei dont know whether some one will do something to stop this, BUT i will do something ..... and teach the scammer a lesson that nigerians scammer will not forget
The same thing happened to me this week. I was selling a camera on craigslist, when a man named Nick Douglas contacted and offered on it. He requested a paypal request, so I obliged. Soon thereafter I started receiving emails from what I thought was paypal. The email address was service@paypal.com Sounds legit, right? It required me to ship the item, send the tracking number to paypalpay@mail2pal.com. Although I had suspicious feelings, I went on with the transaction. I dropped it off at the post office today, sent the tracking number and recieved an email in return containing several grammatical errors. Feeling even more suspicious, I started doing my homework (which I should have done previously). I came upon this blog and promptly called the post office and requested a cancellation of the shipment. The readily obliged, and I was luckily saved from the scam. Beware of Nigerians...I should have known better after the fuckers tried to blow up Detroit.
ReplyDeleteI just got scammed a lady contacted me on craigslist wanting to buy a laptop, she asked to pay through pay pal and I said ok, I sent the package thinking ok it sounds legit, once again I get an email a few days later, asking to send 300 dollars for a custom fee. I sent it, then I get an email asking for another 600 dollars, then I thought no way this is real, I contacted pay pal and they said it was a scam, I called the post office and tried to track the package but it had already left the united states, Is there anything that we can do about this now i'm out a laptop and 300 dollars. I feel so stupid never again will I do business with nigerians.

ReplyDeleteHey everybody, do you think this is a good solution. First, make a temporary Email account at gmail/yahoo. that way if they want to spam you, who cares. its not your main account. then send an email like so:
ReplyDeleteDear Buyer
1. Please send the payment to TemporaryEmailAccount@yahoo.com the paypal website. And, Send me an email at TemporaryEmailAccount@yahoo.com letting me know that you have sent the payment thru paypal immediately after. In the email, include exactly where I am shipping the computer (name, street address, city, state, country zip code). Also, acknowledge the fact that there will be no more money exchange, payments or anything else dealing with money in relation to this transaction. Should any issue relating to money arise after you send this email, you (the buyer) will be responsible no matter what.
2. Once i can see the payment in my "history" I will verify that the money transfer is legitimate. This should only take seconds to do after recieving the notification email that you have sent the payment thru paypal.
3. I will phone up paypal immediately after at 402-935-2050 to verify that the payment is complete.
4. In 3-5 business days i will send you the item via fedex (as well as cash out on the money to make sure this is not a bogus transaction). Fedex will package it, and send it. (It will be sent with confirmation delivery). I will email you the tracking number.
thank you
my name is stephen and i am thorougly ashamed to call my self a nigerian but while i sympathise with your situaion i want you to know that those pricks who are scamming people are already being hunted downby the govt, as well as good hearted nigerians, for Gods sake we are over 140 million people, we all cant be bad. just like you have bad guys in your countries as wellbut that does not make you all bad too. nigerians need you to help us fight the scammers by not responding to their mails and making sure that YOU GET PAID FIRST BEFORE SENDING ANYTHING TO NIGERIA. TRUELY SORRY FOR ALL YOUR LOSSES.
ReplyDeleteThis is me doing the research before agreeing to sell the item to someone in Nigeria.
ReplyDeletejsvlad, your letter is excellent, and I hope you don't mind that I've copied it and will send it to the guy who wanted me to send my jewellery pieces advertised on kijiji.ca to his wife in Nigeria for her b-day rushrush!
My guy uses the email addy garrymary68@yahoo.com. I did an ip search using the email headers and found that it was sent from Nigeria (even though he said he was "out of the state"). A red flad went up immediately, and I ended up here through a google search on the topic of nigeria paypal scams.
I just sent a laptop to Nigeria as well...Global Express...not only am I out a laptop, but over $200 to send it...I am now kicking myself...my intuition told me this is not right....but I trusted the buyer....did the same with a Zune going to China. I am struggling between blaming myself for being so trusting (or stupid)....and being absolutely livid at these SOBs....What goes around comes around...I guess if you have to make a living trying to screw people with scams...I should feels sorry for them...I guess I made another charitable donation this year... I did send all my emails to Paypal so they can continue to combat this problem. C'est la vie....
ReplyDeleteAt least I have found some comfort knowing I was not the only one who was trusting...
yep, me too.... awful. i was all excited to get this thing sold and it was a hefty sum of cash. but paypal through the UK for NIGERIA? eh.... plus, they missed a word in the first sentence from their suspicious PayPal reps..... anyways. this one was from:

Luckily I did the standard 5-8 day shipping instead of express, I sent the package off today, looked up this scam and called again they said I have enough time to cancel the delivery tomorrow before it leaves the U.S. Once the package leaves and ends up in customs, the U.S.P.S doesn't have any jurisdiction. I received e-mail saying the payment has been confirmed but there is a delay of paypal and be patient, and begged saying don't cancel the delivery...yeah right.
I just got this one, Good thing I googled nigerian paypal scams huh... I almost sent out a 2 carat diamond ring.lol !

Wow! I'm glad I read this web page! I almost got scammed by the Nigerians too!! I posted a very expensive watch on Craigslist just last night and a woman (Alice Cage=bjdoman2003@gmail.com) responded to my ad asking what my final price would be. She then quickly responded she would be willing to throw in much more than I was even asking (which was fishy) and said that she was going to transfer the money through PayPal (immediately). I sent her the Money Request and she then tells me the funds couldn't be released until I gave her a tracking number (same as the other victim stories). I too was very convinced that it was all legit when I received an email that seemed so professional and convincing:
ReplyDeleteFrom: "service@paypal.com."

I am real glad I read this site. I just told that person that the deal is off and that I knew it was a SCAM!
It's sad that there are so many deceiving people out in the world who can care less what they take from others!
Oh, and the "Shipping Address" they gave me was:

ReplyDeleteIve been tracking the item but last data shows it left NYC and that was over 2 weeks ago... Is there anything USPS can do to recall the item? I dont even know where the package was shipped to from NYC but they dont know anything from the tracking number. Is there absolutely anything they can do to get the package back? or if it was insured can I somehow recover damages? it was insured with delivery confirmation.
hahahahahaha!!! same here! selling ipod touch on craigslist...said her son was schooling in nigeria....really...? caught that idiot only because my father had gotten scammed 3 days before me on an ipad....wow, this is insain....heres my "NY girl trying to get the ipod to her son schooling in nigeria".

I also posted item on Craigs List & had very quick response from Raimi Azeez at No 158 Baptist Church Owu, totoro, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria 121101. He offered more than item was priced (1st red flag). He was anxious to get item, wanted it shipped immediately. I received fake email from PayPal stating there was Temporary Hold Pending Verification. Email went on to say funds would be credited to my account when tracking number was sent to postageverificationteam@representative.com. Fortunately, I did Google search & found all your stories. Thanks so much for sharing. You have saved me a lot of grief. Isn't there some way to stop these low lifes?

OH MY GOSH!! so happy i found this post.
ReplyDeletewas about to sell my laptop to a lady from "utah" who wanted to send her son who is studying abroad in west africa a gift. (why didnt he already have a laptop with him??) so she "sends me the payment" thru paypal, and i get a fishy email from paypal saying that once i send the tracking number of the item i shipped, i'll get my money. she also included that she wants me to send it straight to nigeria now. i took the laptop to the post office just to make sure she gave me enough money for shipping and the lady working there told me i better check this out further because she's seen a lot of scams like this... so i looked back at all of my old paypal emails, they all look different than the one that "Dr. Jenny Cloes" sent me. i googled the tracking number and found a blog about a paypal fraud. i did a little more research and came across this blog. and THANK GOODNESS. so i wrote back and told dr jenny cloes that i cannot send the item anymore and she writes back saying that she will take me to court. oh i'm so scared.. haha

ReplyDeleteI got the same scam... I almost sent out and ipad but I had a funny feeling something was up. I searched the address on google and this post came up.... THANK YOU FOR POSTING INFORMATION ABOUT THIS. I called paypal, reported them as well as forwarded the fraudulent emails and sent them a nasty email in return. Now they are sending me emails that they are going to report me to the fbi and their lawyer?!? Good luck fuckers. The email addresses they used were: timmytin124@gmail.com and jole212@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI was suspicious that something fishy was going on today, so i googled an address in nigeria that I sent an item to on friday. This is the address

I am absolutely devastated. Not only did I send a brand new phone worth 130euro but I then recieved an email from paypal saying the needed me to send 200euro through western union as my account had 350 euro going into it instead of 150. I was 100% sure that I was actually dealing with paypal.
The email they used was "service@paypal.com."
I feel like such an IDIOT! And now i'm broke for the rest of the month.
Heartless shits!
3 days later and 7 similar emails from 'interested' buyers for my laptop. I suppose my laptop must be very special for it to be shipped all the way to Nigeria from South Africa where I stay (mind u, one address was in Cairo, Egypt) - o yes, I remember, they don't sell laptops in Africa......yeah right.........I wasn't only bombarded by these emails, but SMS's as well where these fraudsters fabricate banking institution proof of payment statements. They would present you with such a statement, you will hand over the item and later find that payment was never made. If you call and advise that you call the police they will calmly respond and say that they know where you live/work (happened to my girlfriend a while ago).
ReplyDeleteI got the timmytin124@gmail email too. from some lady claiming to be Gabler Sara living in New York and her son lives in Nigeria. I called paypal, reported it, and just sent the person an email saying "called paypal. You aren't legit. You aren't getting my camera. Screw you."
ReplyDeleteselling my netbook on craiglist. got an offer from a jenifercloud@gmail.com who wanted to give me $30 more than i was asking in order to close the auction. Sending it to her son who was studying overseas. The sons name being completely different. Got the scam paypal notice emails through gmail. Looked up the details of the email, and they were sent using gmail.com, and not paypal.com. So always check the details of the email if things dont seem legitamite
ReplyDeleteemail jus received by a Sara Gabler at timmytin124@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteThanks for you reply,i am located in Remsenburg city in NY,i really need to buy this and send to my son schooling outside the state as a gift .I have been trying to buy this on ebay but its so very stressful buying on ebay.I will offer you $150 so as to close the auction as soon as possible.I will be paying through PAYPAL because i have a verified account with paypal. So kindly get back with your paypal email address so i can make payment into your paypal account.Once payment clears, shipment will be handled by me through my personal fedex account,so you dont have to pay for shipment.Get back to me if my approval is granted.I would like to see the pictures please. Thanks.
_______
i had pictures up on craigslist already. freakin scammers
really wish i'd seen this blog 3 days ago. got scammed myself, sent out an ipod touch to a buyer's "cousin" in Nigeria after emails from "service@Paypal" claimed that that the item had been paid for. didn't get suspicious until 24 hours later when "paypal" reported an overdraft of $200 that i needed to reimburse the buyer by way of a bank check. By the time I got off the phone with the real PayPal, my ipod had left the country.
ReplyDeleteI am soooo glad i found this post also. I was getting excited to finally sell my camera before Christmas. But I have ran into a few people trying to scam me before and decided to research this one also.
ReplyDeleteI was emailed by an Alice Sandra asking if it was still for sale and how much.
Later after i emailed her she said she will pay me through her verified paypal account and handle the packages herself through her personal FedEx account. After i agreed she sent me an email "from PayPal Services" saying she sent me the money and once i sent her the tracking number she will confirm the payment into my account then said there was issues with her FedEx account and i needed to send it ASAP USPS her son is expecting it.
good thing i didnt send it though.
All I have to say is try and deal local and if you meet up make sure its in a public place with a lot of people around.
FUCK JENIFER CLOUD! I really wish I googled her name and found out about this earlier. I should've stuck with my gut feeling and knew it was a scam but when I got an email from paypal saying I was delaying the sending that they would get the FBI involved and become a legal matter which made me send it asap. I lost my entire house and everything in a flood and that was going to help me out financially. And as always I get fucked from the scum of this earth. FUCK HERRRRRRRRRR.
ReplyDeleteSame thing just happened to me "Ethan Noah" is the named they used, email address etanoah@gmail.com. He sent me money via paypal and I received a confermation email from paypal. It all seemed lagit until I checked the address he sent me

And this post showed up of this blog. So I called paypal customer service and asked if the money had gone through. she told me there was nothing showing where any money had come through. I told her well paypal sent me an email confirming the transaction, she said we have not sent you any emails. She asked what email address was used by paypal I told her "service@paypal.org".......she said that is a fraudulent account and to forward it to there spoof dept. so I did! I learned that the only way to know if it is a true email from paypal is that it will say service@paypal.com not .org!
So thanks for this bog post it saved me from loosing a $500 phone!
Thank you everyone for posting on this blog, because I had just avoided a horrific scam! Wow. Last night I posted a Canon Powershot SD1400is for $150 on Facebook MarketPlace, and this lady named "Mary Luse" sent me a message saying she is willing to pay for $280, asked for my paypal account, wanted me to send her an email of pictures and take down the listing right away. All in poor grammar too. On her Facebook wall was nothing but responding to listings at the MarketPlace, so that is a sign! On her info it says she worked for Grooveshark and went to college in Georgia. UGH! DISGUSTING.
ReplyDeleteSo here are the infos:

Fortunately for me, I caught the bad spelling and grammar right away. They also sent the same type of email from 2 different people. One wanted the laptop for his wife (gordonjones@aol.com), the other for his minister's wife (holy4man). He tried the PayPal thing, so we told we only accept Credit Cards. He had the audacity to say he only uses PayPal because there is so much fraud. So, I wanted to have little fun with this guy. So, I send him a link to my PayPal Request for money. The link looked like this user1234/paypal/payment. However, the link went to the FBI cyber crime homepage. I couldn't believe it - the guy wrote back and said he didn't understand the link and please send him a real PayPal money request. So, I send him a note with "my apologies". I said I forgot a word in the link. I told him for security reasons, he must use the link to access the payment request. I ended the note with "This will get you exactly what you need." This time, I made the link go to whatismyip.com. So, when he clicks on the link, the webpage pops up with the words "Your IP address is XXX.XX.XXXX". Except the X's are his actual IP address. So, it looks like I sent him his actual IP address. Needless to say, he hasn't contacted me again.
ReplyDeleteThe only reason I caught this is because I am familiar with computers. What bothers me, my friends and family are not. I have received numerous calls and emails from people that are a bit nervous about a request like this, so they ask me to check it out first. Like many of you, I googled the names. Anyone can fall for this. If you did, you are just a good person and thought you were doing the right thing. The best thing we can all do to help is notify PayPal,Craigslist, EBay, and the email service they are using like Yahoo, aol, gmail. Then, tell everyone you know what to watch for - the broken English, the shipping request, the PayPal request, etc.
It's not just Nigeria that does this stuff, trust me. Craigslist especially is full of scammers and cons. I have seen ads with signed antiques listed and include pictures. They don't promise authenticity, they say "Found in my grandmother's attic. Don't know if they are real, so I will sacrifice for $50." What they have is something they bought at Hobby Lobby (if it's that nice) for about $20 and they scratched the "artist's" signature on the bottom. The moral of this story, just be careful. It might happen to you once, but it won't happen to you again. Those of you that took the time to post, saved a lot of other people from being ripped off. Thank you for that.

hi Guys,
ReplyDeletethe same thing happened on me. But it is still in PROCESS.
I've send the money to Nigeria today, but I finally stoped this, and get it back. The point is: I've send a guitar to USA, from Poland, europe.
The item is on the way NOW.The adress:
Alvaro Carvajal 78 park ave apartment
2a Summit 07901, New Jersey
could anybody from Summit help me to contact they local UPS departament before these guys get my item? I've already asked UPS to stop delivery, but it is a long way, I'm not sure if they really will do this.
The good thing is: I didn't send anything to NIgeria.
The bad thing: I still didn't receive a message from UPS if they send my item back to POland.
Can anybody from USA help me? Do you know where exactly should i write? Or maybe you know anyone from UPS there?
If I stop this before monday, april 25th 2011 it is the chance to get my item back.
Please help...

These people aren't as slick as they think. We advertised a used pickup truck for a family friend and early the next day, we had a hit from this guy:
ReplyDeletenickgrant0003@gmail.com
His English is atrocious, but I gave him the benefit of the doubt until the third email, when he asked for our Paypal email address to transfer money "ASAP", trying to pressure us into giving info.
I googled his email and found a similar email address ending in 0003@gmail.com, found this website.
Notified Paypal of the scam, spoke with a friend who is a State Trooper. No money or goods changed hands, nothing can be done. I may invite him over to pickup the truck so I can have a face to face with "Nick."
Got scammed too, and the person keeps telling me that they are going to pay me and how can they make me believe them, so I told them to tell me where their son was going to college, since that is who my phone that I "sold" him was for, and I would go figure it out with him...Mark Abel, Abeokuta, Ogun, Nigeria is where mine came from, and he couldn't use his fedex acct. either, etc. etc...I told him that if he was a real person to be careful from now on opening packages that they scammed because who knows what might really be in it...

ReplyDeleteAnd what should I expect from this point forward? More junk e-mails, certainly, but should I I expect that the person will try to hack my PayPal account? Or is there a possibility of identity fraud? I assume those answers are no, because I haven't seen them mentioned in the posts above.

ReplyDeleteSeriously, ignorance really is a bad thing. Here is the deal people. I am Nigerian living in the US. Know this : NIGERIA DOES NOT USE ZIP CODES!!!!
ReplyDeleteThrough some comments I found that zip codes/ postal codes are being implemented : http://www.nigeriapostcodes.com/views/rural.php
But they are not used. I ship packages to my family without using those. I guess the scammers understand that an air of familiarity goes a long way in roping targets in
And the supposed zip codes are so weird and all have the country's dailing code. God help Nigeria
people, call post service which you used to ship the parcel, it is possible to return it even if it left the customs!!!
ReplyDeletetoday I got a call from post office that I will get my parcel back, eventhough 17 days have passed since I shipped it and the parcel was already out of Russia
I was selling my HTC phone on gum-tree
ReplyDeleteI put my ad on gum-tree at 11 pm and i got text from some unknown buyer early at 7 am in the morning showing interest buying it
So i replied to text and as same as other people he was so hurry in transferring the money and shipping the item ASAP
I had no idea about any Nigeria Scam
We had very long chat upon it
And finally he gave me his cousins address
"Hi mate Payment has been made and by now PayPal should have notify you
because i just received my deduction notification below is the address
where the item will be shipped to, So kindly help me with the shipment
as soon as possible through Australia Post Parcel Airmail or Express

He was ready to pay anything for the mobile
I received an email from FAKE PAYPAL asking me for TRACKING NUMBER
So After few days i shipped the item to Nigeria and sent TRACKING NUMBER to FAKE PAYPAL
So they replied me saying your account will be credited in 48 hours
So i thought i should wait for it
Next day,i again ask them(PAYPAL)for money, this time they asked me for scan copy of receipt(From POST), so i scanned it and sent it.
So again they replied me saying your account will be credited in 24 hours
So this time i was like there is something fishy
So i called to PAYPAL for confirmation and they said i have not received any money from NIGERIA
They also said that we never done any kind of transaction through NIGERIA.
So i called to post to recall my parcel ASAP
But unfortunately parcel was already out of melbourne.
So they contact to Nigeria DHL office and tried to stop delivery and luckily parcel returned from the destination & i got my mobile back after 10 days.
That cunt was pissed off with it
Sending me an email saying whats going on why its returned to you and blah blah....
Thanks to POST
NEVER EVER SEND ANY PARCEL TO NIGERIA WITHOUT GETTING PAID
How are you guys sending out packages just by receiving the PayPal payment emails??? Be sure to log in to your account at paypal.com and check the transactions before sending anything out. If you see nothing, then no payment has been sent despite the emails from PayPal (which is fake).

So they told me they never sent me emails and asked what i was talking about i forward msgs to spoof@paypal.com. DONT BE FOOLED!!! i than call usps and they stop the package they were about to put it in the truck. I got a refund of my money!! :) Thanks god. dont be fool read his msg.

ReplyDeleteTurns out it's not hard to fake emails from PayPal that look official and USPS refunded my shipping costs. Luckily it was only 30min after I was ready to send this off.
The info I received came from:
Cortnie Meier
cortmeertn@yahoo.com
item was to be sent to

Beware of unsusal names, poor use of grammar/spelling and call PayPal to confirm payments
Just wanted to say this is happening in the UK as well:

The name of the woman was Jasmine Morgan
I didn't fall for the scam, and it was only after reading this that I even noticed the emails in my spam and remembered I'd sent the removal company's emails to spam as well. Gmail will send all the fake paypal emails straight to spam. If anyone ever says they've paid you on paypal, check it first it's pretty much instant or send them a payment request.
WHAT A FAKE!
